There is a new gallery in town, but it won’t be here long. What looks like a former car garage in the Marigny has been transformed into a beautiful and swanky art space for just ten days. Photographer Michael Weintrob’s “InstrumentHead” photo series will be on display at the Frenchmen Art Market through Jazz Fest. “I love that we get to come in here and create something unique,” says Weintrob of his pop-up gallery located at 2121 Chartres St.
The portraits were taken at his studio in New York, but featured will be many local musicians you’re sure to recognize, just not by their faces. By not showing an artist’s face, Weintrob actually reveals greater depths to their story. The project is six years in the making and until Thursday night’s opening gala, only 15-20 prints were ever available for viewing online.
In the “InstrumentHead” series, a musician’s instrument is thoughtfully positioned in front of their face. “These instruments become just as famous as the musicians are,” says Weintrob. He likes to keep people guessing. Some photographs are more obvious than others. “These musicians are not models, they’re musicians, performers.”
